That IT issue was an example given, a question as to IT being tarrifed, if it might have helped reduce the more severe tarrifs on Agriculture.
IT did escape tarrifs already, I think, but under the—what is it called(?)— H1, or H1-B1 foreign worker program?
Didn’t they tweak that, with exceptions for certain specialties?
Anyway, the point was around US concerns so great around de-dollarization, that antagonizing a swath of global economies may risk bringing more BRICS countries together.
India is lost. Would others follow?
The question seemed to be important from India’s pov— a reasonable one, not critical.
It is supposed to be temporary (6 years), but the holder and employer can apply for extensions, and the holder can apply for a green card (permanent resident) while they are here.
Lots of them just overstay the visa, and become one among the armies of scammers ringing and dinging your phone 20 times a day. That alone should warrant Scaphism or some equally delightful exercise for the offenders.
The rule is that the H-1B goobers must be paid at least the market price of American person being displaced. It usually takes 3 to 5 of the imported insects to replace each American, all of which are paid premium salaries. The hiring managers don't mind, because they are getting lucrative kickbacks from the Hindi body shops for placing the fake techies, most of whom only have the equivalent of one or two semesters in programming and database skills, and they call that a Bachelors degree.
The H-1B program was a racist scam from the very beginning in 1990. The IT sector was, up to then, dominated by white males earning good salaries, mostly with BS degrees in computer science, information systems, engineering, math, and similar fields. Most of the jobs were 24/7/365, very long work weeks, around the clock. Leftist white women were incensed that white men were doing well in a field that few of them could succeed in. Women and minorities were getting recruited out of their junior year of college because the companies and govt agencies were getting credit for their diversity hiring quotas. (Colorado state govt had a 3-1 rule for hiring through the 1980s that required that only 1 white male could be hired for every 3 women/minority hires).
And the war goes on and on.
