This is going to be a problem for everyone. And I hate saying that, because I am a firm believer that the solution to bad speech is not censorship, but more speech.
This is not speech.
As funny as I think this is, we are going to see terrible things result from this.
This one is obvious and funny. But other videos may not be as obvious but will not be meant as humor, but to create hate and discontent.
This is going to become a tool for propagandists who want to create hate and discontent, cause violence and even could result in war.
The problem is, even dimwits have a truth indicator (no matter how small and dysfunctional it might be) that can serve when they read a quote or see an image which can allow them to at least gauge the authenticity.
I believe that videos like this can be made to serve a nefarious purpose. We don’t have the built in tools to allow us to make judgements on videos, especially well constructed ones.
The reason it is dangerous is that there exists a large body of people both here and around the world who will be susceptible to a malignant use of this kind of technology.
That old saying is particularly appropriate today in the age of universal and instantaneous communication over the entire globe: “The Lie makes it around the world before The Truth gets its pants on.”
There will be a key time interval between when something more malicious than first appears and is seen and digested by millions or even billions of people around the world before the truth of the matter begins to percolate out.
The malicious video will spread like measles in a grade school of unvaccinated children, and the slow, oozing truth will not only take a glacially long time to work its way out, it will not be seen by anyone, and the denials of authenticy are going to fall on the deaf ears of people who have hardened their hearts to some artificially constructed video.
In that time interval between the Lie hitting the streets and the Truth sweeping up after it, there is going to be broken glass and broken lives.
This one is funny, and obviously a fake. Take a moment and think of how this is going to be intentionally misused to whip up a riot, a killing, or even a war.
Wonder what if anything network news will have to say?.
