The American right is falling out of love with Israel
The Hill ^ | 07/30/25 8:30 AM ET | by Abdullah Hayek, opinion contributor

Unconditional American support for Israel — once the bedrock of conservative foreign policy — is crumbling in real time.

From Congress to right-wing media and Trump-aligned grassroots organizations, a new tone is taking shape towards Israel: one of skepticism, impatience and in some cases outright hostility. The Republican Party’s old covenant with Israel is no longer sacred — and the cracks are widening fast.

In the mid-20th century, Republicans were generally skeptical of Israel, instead favoring Arab ties. Support grew later, driven by Cold War strategy, evangelical Zionism, neoconservatism and post-9/11 alliances — ultimately transforming the GOP into Israel’s most loyal political partner.

But that alliance is now eroding at a stunning pace. If Israel hopes to preserve its standing, it must act swiftly to reassert its dependability as a strategic ally — or risk forfeiting support not only from the American left, but from its most reliable partners on the right.

Nowhere is the fracture more evident than in President Trump’s second term. In April, his administration slapped Israel with a 17 percent reciprocal tariff. Israeli officials were “in complete shock” after having abolished tariffs on U.S. imports in hopes of an exemption. This signaled that Trump would not give Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu everything he wanted — friendship doesn’t mean favoritism.

That message grew louder during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran. Trump brokered a fragile ceasefire that Israel broke within hours. On June 24, Trump erupted in fury. “They don’t know what the f— they’re doing,” he snapped. “I’m not happy with Israel … you don’t go out in the first hour and just drop everything you have on them.”

And it wasn’t an isolated outburst...

There is definitely an element that is turning against America, against Europe, and against Israel and the West while embracing Russia whole heartedly, and Russia’s view of the world, in joining Russia they are even in the early stages of softening on Russia’s friends and allies, like North Korea, China, and Iran, and Russian friendly states, and endorsing and even enthusiastic about Brics.

What good is beefing up a secular military account, claiming you’ll be “blessed” for doing so when every other area of your life, faith walk, and national life is toxic, bitter, and impoverished? What if supporting someone or something, does not mean *enabling sin* which gravely dishonors God. What does it profit to gain the world but lose one’s soul?

I often bring up the example of a lost girl walking into a Sunday church service, wrestling with whether to take her abortion pill or not, and instead of hearing about Jesus, she is greeted to a pastor ranting about the latest Middle East meltdown and spewing hate about Arabs?🙄

So much for an opportunity to advance the kingdom.

*Note: Christians, including Evangelicals who support Israel, in other countries do not have the same idolatrous Left Behind, politicized rapture fever that defined much of mainstream American Evangelicalism for a time.

I agree with you - maybe conservatives are a little more discerning now than before.

Here’s my challenge: I don’t think the right was ever “in love” with Israel. Like all systems of government, they are seriously flawed. However, they are keeping the “huns” at the gates, and that’s a big deal. I’d really like to see them flatten Gaza and rebuild it as a resort area. Maybe another “trump hotel” is in order. Send the “palestinians” there back to their homeland - Jordan.

Trump was not elected with Jewish votes.

Democrats panic; there’s no accurate polling of Jewish voters
because there are too few Jews in the United States to matter
So why the endless tax dollar giveaways to get the “Jewish vote”?
World Israel News ^ | 5/24/24 | Daniel Greenfield

After tossing Jewish voters overboard to accommodate the Hamas supporters of Dearborn, Michigan, the Democrats are starting to get nervous about the choice they made.

Despite the roll-out of the campaign, beginning with Senator Schumer’s floor speech blasting Israel, and various liberal Jewish surrogates, including Rep. Jerry Nadler, vocally opposing the campaign against Hamas, the Democrats did not manage to sell Jews on Biden’s betrayal.

Biden’s declaration that he would stop providing military support to Israel if it continued to pursue Hamas into Rafah touched off a major backlash from donors, like Haim Saban, from celebrities, like Michael Rappaport, who has said he could vote for Trump, and ordinary Jews.

While there’s no accurate polling of Jewish voters because there are too few Jews in much of the country to be captured by conventional polls and polls specifically surveying Jews are usually run by leftist groups, Democrats have suddenly begun to sweat the Jewish vote.

An ethnic group thankfully doomed to extinction.

Approximately 1.8 million Jewish adults, just under one-third
of the total Jewish electorate, live in twenty-five Democrat congressional districts.

National Profile of the Jewish Electorate, May 2020
Of the top twenty-five districts by Jewish population, nearly half are in New York — NY10, NY-3, NY-12, NY-17, NY4, NY-9, NY-6, NY-8, and NY11.

The remaining districts with Jewish populations are found in seven states including Florida, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. FL-21 has the greatest number of Jewish adults at 152,000.

With the exception of NJ-4, these districts are represented by Democrats and all but two (NJ-4 and NJ-5) are Democratic-leaning districts.

US Jews contribute half of all donations to the Democratic Party

A new study argues that the large majority of American Jews have a deep-seated notion that being Jewish is inextricably bound to being liberal.

That idea took hold after the large waves of Jewish immigration to the US in the late 19th century, according to the study’s author, American history professor Gil Troy.

American Jewish liberalism and association with the Democratic party is showing no signs of abatement, despite many predictions to the contrary since Ronald Reagan’s presidency, according to Troy’s research, which is being published by the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Program for American Jewish Studies at the University of Haifa.

The world goes through these stops and starts of moral sickness. We’re living through such a time where evil has once again gotten a leg up. However, the core of the US is good. I predict Israel will lead the world back to civilizational behavior and advancement by example.

<< Opinions on Israel, both here in the U.S. and abroad, have shifted considerably over the past three years, and they’re not shifting in Israel’s favor. >>

And that’s because, for whatever reason, many people only feel comfortable with Jews-as-victims. When Israelis / Jews stand up for themselves and fight back, even against the worst people on earth (the Iranian mullahs, Hamas, etc), the reflexive anti-semites get triggered.

The 4th Congressional District of New Jersey has a Jewish population which is heavily Hasidic or other types of Orthodox Jews, who tend to vote Republican. The district includes Lakewood, a community of 90,000 of whom two thirds are Orthodox Jews.

Younger people in general aren’t knee-jerk supporters of Israeli policy the way that older people are.

I'm sure that's true. We lived through the '67 War, when Israel was ambushed on three borders, and came close (thank the Lord for sucker-bait Moslem frenzy and cowardice) to being overrun, but saved by their own heroism and Western weapons and ammo refills. It was a real education, as were the subsequent Moslem sneak-attack wars every five years or so--as soon as they were resupplied by the usual suspect nations.

Moslems are crazy by religion and personality. Civilization can't afford them to get too many weapons or too much territory. They can't get along with anyone--including each other. If you put up with rats or cockroaches, you'll soon be ruled by them--and that's not good.

We all realize that Moslems would be our violent enemies, regardless of whether Israel existed--right? History stands witness to their always-bloody borders.
