Post the worst covers songs you’ve ever heard
-PJ
Lenny Kravitz - American Woman
Beyoncé ~ Jolene
Please don’t give it a sample. That will only encourage her.
It only took 6 posts into the thread, and we have a clear winner
Well done! I had completely forgotten this existed.
That’s really bad.
Mick Jagger and David Bowie “Dancing In the Street”
Brewer and Shipley’s “One Toke Over the Line” as performed by Gale and Dale on the Lawrence Welk show, a “modern spiritual”. I’m sure they had no idea at all what “toke” meant. Makes your flesh crawl.

For reference, the original:

Ha. Went to a minor league game with family last night. In the pregame time they played American Pie, with its infamous time of 8 minutes, 42 seconds. I heartily sang along, much to the chagrin of my 23 year old son
I remember my mom saw that version on TV and she loved it. My dad said nothing and I just shook my head.
Scotty doesn’t know.
Or maybe they knew!
Hmmmm.
Yep, I posted a link the Gale and Dale version of ‘One Toke’ a few months back. I’ll just echo Slater, from ‘Dazed & Confused’, you can’t handle that on strong acid (or any substance, or even completely straight). One of the most bizarre moments on American TV.
Re: “Till There Was You”.
You didn’t care for Paul’s singing on that song?!
Well, different people will have different opinions and/or expectations.
I thought it was a great example of his singing skills at that point in time, when he was still young and full throated. I thought it was adorable warble, cloaked in sentiment. Something one would sing at a wedding reception or an anniversary.
But then, I didn’t know of the original, and have never compared the two. For a long while, I thought Paul had written it. At that time, he was quite capable of mastering the most flowing of melodies. I.E. the glowing classic:
“Here, There and Everywhere”. I have still never tired of hearing that song.
I liked the Beatles version. Fits in well with their early catalog.
“Mick Jagger and David Bowie “Dancing In the Street”
Yes, dreadful. Think there might be other covers of that song, also dreadful. For whatever reason only Martha and the Vadnellas could sing that song.
Why not do the best?
Not to hijack the thread but,
Nanci Griffith doing Dylan’s ‘Boots of Spanish Leather’ comes to mind
And Bob Dylan doing Patsy Cline’s version of “You Belong to Me” written by Chilton Price.
