I used to be extremely critical of suicide, but as I get older, I’m surrounded by people my age who have no support system after loved ones around them die or otherwise leave. I cannot imagine the hopelessness of some of their situations as they become infirm and ill.

I even had a late-60’s friend of mine tell me outright that when his wife passes away, he’ll probably do himself in, being childless.

“I used to be extremely critical of suicide...”

Same here. I thought it was selfish and pure weakness. But as I’ve grown older and seen people around me struggle, fall into depair, have no loved ones left in their lives, I get it. It’s not so simple. It’s not quite what I thought it was.
