If Ferguson had that same time slot he would rule.
Craig’s show was certainly cheaper, and even more certainly much funnier and just plain better overall, than Colbert’s ever was.
He had been promised it by Letterman when he came on originally, then was sandbagged when it was given to James Cordon. Compared to the costume horse and skeleton robot, Cordon got a huge budget —and he has an ego to match. Never could stand him. What a disappointment.
Craig was socially lefty in his way, living on the left coast, but he was also a new American citizen and appreciated many things about our history and mentioned them on his show. The year after he became a citizen, he was the featured comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner (Dubya was still President). He got the Join or Die snake cartoon designed by Ben Franklin tattooed on his forearm to celebrate his citizenship.
He is a very intelligent man, but not overeducated, so he remained relateable. I still watch some of his great Late Late shows on YouTube.
