Not exactly mainstream, but baseball board games from Strat-O-Matic and APBA were quite popular. So were the various bookshelf board games from Avalon Hill, which included many war game scenarios.

Man I loved Strat O Matic. Before I’d ever heard of fantasy baseball, I would take my strat cards to school and we’d have a draft. I’d charge a buck a team. Then I’d go home every night and play teams against each other solitaire style and bring the box scores and cumulative stats to school the next day.
My desk in homeroom was always mobbed.

I played both baseball games and many war games.

Strat-O-Matic is still going strong and the company is still in business. It has an almost cult-like following with a number of Facebook groups.
