“The word “Alcatraz” originates from the Spanish word “alcatraces,” which generally refers to seabirds, particularly pelicans, according to the National Park Service. In 1775, Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala named one of the islands in San Francisco Bay “Alcatraces” during his expedition to map the area, says the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Over time, the name was Anglicized to Alcatraz.”
