Because the idiots aren't prepared for the conditions and many will die there and put the lives of those who work there at risk.
The people who work there aren't paid search and rescue teams and if they have to go out and risk THEIR lives looking for every fool who gets himself in trouble, they'll never get anything done.
Plus they're not getting paid for that risk. It's not what they signed up for.
Besides, seeing what damage *tourists* do to an environment with no oversight, they're better off being kept away than destroying the last virtually untouched ecosystem in the world.

I think a few tourists aren’t a danger to a ice covered continent. Individuals are much less likely to screw things up than Government researchers with no oversight.
Let people know, they are on their own. No rescue, no food, no water, no housing. If you show up, you are truly on your own.
My suspicion is there is something going on there that the public is not supposed to know about or see. While the US was playing at Moon shots, the rest of the world was down in the big freeze, at least the major players. They signed a treaty, with the USSR, Britain, France, Germany and the US. Now at the time, we were mortal enemies with USSR, as were others.
