The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation's economy.
“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned."
The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. Additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they have earned.
Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

“So how does this work exactly?”
Well, it’s nearly impossible to live off of social security in retirement so:
File to start SS.
Obtain Passport
Settle Your affairs
Move overseas to a lower cost of living economy.
The big savings are in healthcare, housing and food. Offset by travel costs and social changes
Go where you are treated better
Nobody, anywhere has the straight explanation. It is complex, just as you said. That means it’s a snow job. Bait and switch for 3 years.
And the celebration they are throwing means they feel no pressure now.
That’s it folks, the whole thing. The sparrow farted.
I received an email from SS last night celebrating the Bill passage. Now if only they could get off their a$$ and approve the start of my monthly payments. I hit full retirement three days ago and the online application I submitted was May 14th. So much for their 30 day “typical” approval time.
Not like you think it does. It's definitely not the "no tax on SS" promise. Run the numbers. We got screwed again. I'd rather have the original promise of "no tax on SS."
I made $31,600 on social security last year. My pension is about the same. I have no other income. Does that mean that $22,000 of the 31,600 is not taxable?
SS tax in old age is double taxation. Trump is doing this because he is smart enough to know that. When I worked I was taxed on my whole income, which included my SS amount. You working people check and you will see you are paying taxes on it too.
Obviously now that I am old, they are taxing it again (up to 85%).
I have often wondered how Congress got by with this slick trick way back.
It's more than that. It's flat out bait-and-switch.
Thanks for posting the link. I was wondering if they were going to keep the existing $2K additional senior deduction amount. The link answers that question..
Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors.
Play on words, when you read the bill it’s BS. If you and your wife make 150G you’re out.
The GOPee is Soup Nazing me.
Trump: “No tax on SS!”
GOPee: “No relief for YOU!”
You add the 2 sources of income and subtract $23750. That will be your taxable income. That is assuming your taking the standard deductions.
The One Big Beautiful Bill should be re-named the Keep Tax Accountants Working Act.
____Play on words, when you read the bill it’s BS. If you and your wife make 150G you’re out.____
Well, I guess it helps those retired on social security who make less than 150K per year. I would imagine that’s most people too.
It looks like the foreign invaders are going to have to pay for their own “a better life.” I’m done with it. They can pay for all their free stuff themselves. Freeloaders. Training their chimps to bash the Trump America piñata is over.
So in addition to the poor solution it turns out it only lasts 4 years. I understand 60 senate votes are required to eliminate the SS tax, but still I’m very disappointed in this. However, this might be a battle that can be won in the future even with some democrat support.
“Trump ought to be ashamed of himself.”
How can you be so obtuse? The law did not allow Social Security taxes to be changed in that type of bill that was passed yesterday, so they had to make a go-around to accomplish what they wanted.
True, it is only for four years just now. The politicians will point out that that those few billions of dollars, relatively speaking, of extra Social Security costs will collapse the system a year earlier but think nothing of sending trillions of dollars, down the drain, overseas for nation building.
The thinking of the administration is that within that four year period, growth in the economy will allow them to get rid of all taxes on Social Security. Social Security was never taxed until 1983.
Thank you for your post explaining the reality of our existing LAWS and how this works around to offer some relief....until it can be made permanent.
They’re also being short sighted, as to the upside of the coming economy.
Unreal to see the gnashing of teeth, here....the constant griping, after being brought out of the wilderness....again.
What’s historic about it?
Taxing Social Security is a ridiculous ruling. Trump knows that. Of course he got this into the bill. He started talking about it during his rallies.
Social Security was taxed starting in 1984 the 98th congress which was democrat, came up with this
Joe Biden was one of them. Google points out only that Reagan signed it, not hat it was a democrat idea
In 1993, the 103 Congress, democrat, increased the rate to 85%. Biden was in on that. Clinton signed
This way seniors could be further responsible for what is done with our tax money, with little control
Trump said stop this.
The history is that social security wasn’t taxed from its inception in the late 1930s until the democrats in the 1980s.
Spending increases are always permanent, tax cuts are always temporary.
