Tomorrow I will celebrate a 4th of July from 45 years ago. I was invited to my NCOIC's quarters, and his wife cooked the best soul food I have ever eaten. When I asked for seconds on chitlings, she was surprised: "Lieutenant, I never knew you liked soul food."
Her jaw dropped when I replied (as the only white guy there), "Ma'am, your cooking is the best. For some reason, I feel like dancing now." Everyone else broke up laughing, that's how we rolled back then, in the days before political correctness. One had to have a thick skin to work in my section, the jibes were universal.
I'll buy an Alligator Alcatraz t-shirt when they're produced.
My dad retired from the Army in 1963. He told the story of his commanding officer, wa Colonel, and how he gave him his radio call sign, Blackbird One! He said the Colonel loved it but the other officers were afraid to use it.
