Back before I retired, one of my co-workers (nice gal, super lib but we got along fine) told me the same thing. She was a social work volunteer of some kind in SF, delt with gays and lesbians quite a bit, and made the observation that they were the most miserable and depressed people she's ever encountered. (Not a judgment, an observation).
My stepson went to high school with a lesbian and befriended her.
This girl had a poor relationship with her father, he was very clear in his disapproval of her sexual practices.
She attempted suicide at least twice that I am aware of.
After high school he moved out and eventually decided to move in with her because he was having issues with his current roommate.
Not long after he moved all of his stuff into her place she got a new girlfriend and demanded he move out immediately.
He left that minute and after she refused to let him return for his things. All he ever got out of the the apartment was what he took with him in his car.
