I’m surprised that the prosecution took this. They probably were going to get a conviction. Evidence was strong. Did they do it to spare the families?

Not at all. The families are furious that they weren't consulted. They don't like the idea that they have questions that won't be answered, that this evil creature will get to communicate with the outside world, and that he continues to use up oxygen.

Prosecutors Office says they are sparing the families the graphic details at the trial and years of appeals afterward.
The families say they were blindsided and want the trial and the death penalty.
