Some advice I heard is to simply plant a short growing variety after the time that the borers are done with their breeding.
One thing I did find effective in keeping plants alive, especially with vining ones, is to regularly bury the stem at intervals. They’ll root and keep the rest of the plant alive while the infested section dies off.
I could try that with the Opo next year. Or maybe even yet this year, if I could just get any more to germinate! It may be too warm for that, even in our house? (It’s usu. ~ 78-80 deg. F inside. I run just enough AC to keep the humidity down and the temps in the bedrooms around 78 deg. F.)
That is, I could try running the vine back to the ground and then in sort of a sideways “S” along wire fencing or even a thin polyester* rope stretched between 2 tall stakes.
*For UV resistance. Polypropylene will break down in sunlight pretty quickly. :-(
