About 25 years ago there was an earthquake that shook Tahoe early one morning.
It supposedly caused ‘tsunamis’ on the lake. Little 18 inch ones.
There we’re no injuries nor fatalities, luckily…. :-)
I remember the quake, but not the tsunamis, because I was asleep in my bed in Reno at the time.
But no lie, during the quake I was having a dream that I was lost at sea
in a rowboat during a storm. Rocking back and forth.
Until some large object in the next door apartment crashed onto the floor, waking me up.
A few more moments of shaking, and the thing was over.
So occasionally there really are tsunamis on Lake Tahoe!
How did this goof permit his boat to get sided by swells? Simply power on and slice those swells head-on and gtfo out of a cove where you really don’t have any business being in with souls on board.
Wow.
6 dead means no or few lifejackets.
and or really 3 sheets to the wind ( drunk )
You’ve got to give Lake Tahoe complete respect.
There are rugby rules that cancel any games if there is any standing water on the field. Players have drowned.

Sure sounds that way. We’ll probably never hear “the rest of the story”.
One thing about the Dead Sea was when I was there they said beware if you have any nicks or cuts on your skin. One would quickly learn the meaning of rubbing salt into a wound if one decided to take a dip with such. Fortunately I was free of nicks and cuts and yes it’s just like floating. The water there felt different than what we are used to. Very super slick when you felt it with your hands.

The Great Salt Lake is another heavy salt lake. I was in it and it is almost impossible to go any distance below the surface. You float like a cork. And the state provides showers at the lake’s edge to get the salt off the body before you drive back. If you didn’t use them, you and the seats would be crusty and it would exacerbate any rash besides cause burning pain when dried and rubbed.

That’s a neat picture. I’d stick with that, too. It looks like a lot of fun.
Nice lake. I’ve vacationed there several times.
But I bet there are a bunch of people who rent boats there who think it’s just a nice little lake. It’s a big piece of water that is deep and cold. When it gets rolling I imagine “rookies” can get into trouble.
Add in some beer and wine…and you have trouble.
Snooping around a bit, 10 people appears to be max capacity for a boat of that size from the manufacturer(27 ft). There aren't a lot of details about what happened other than 6-8 foot waves on the lake. I wonder if the boat was rented for the day by inexperienced people or was part of a vaction rental package.
Well, after all, Fredo and Neri went fishing in a little metal boat barely big enough for 2 people. Everything went well. Except for Fredo.
Lived in Tahoe for 12 years and spent a lot of time on the lake water skiing and windsurfing - I pretty sure I’ve jumped off that rock in the background.
Big swells have swamped big tour boats on the east shore in Zepher Cove - I think it was the Tahoe Queen.
The lake average depth is 1000’ with the deepest known spot at 1600’. Water temp about 50-54 degrees. The lake holds 121 million acre feet of water - enough to cover the state of Cali with 14”. Contrast that with Lake Powell which has over 2000 miles of shoreline but holds just 21 million acre feet of water at full pool.
I LIVE about 52 miles east of Lake Tahoe. N HIGH DESERT OF NEVADA.
On Thursday & FRIDAY-—it was over 100 degrees-—& WINDY
SAT am it was 60 & MORE WINDS-—Worse than Thursday or Friday.
FIRE NEAR GARDNERVILLE WAS OVER 14,000 acres.
TODAY, IT WAS 38 degrees at 6 AM. NOT much wind at all.
Sounds like a freak occurrence that they could not have foreseen.
They still should have had life jackets for everybody, though.
cold too
News reports said it caught many off guard, even experienced boaters...
