With the availability of electronic auto tuners, how could he have a fine guitar totally out of tune for this historic musical event?
Plus he must have practiced singing the tripe song for hours and then was flat. As someone (cruelly) said of Ringo Starr:
“He tries to make acquaintance with the notes, a little below, a little above and sometimes right on the note as he sings.”
Don’t want to leave a dig at Ringo here, I loved It Ain’t Easy and Photograph, for example, and his overlooked but fine country album Beaucoups of Blues.
The poignant Photograph was sung at the one year anniversary memorial Concert For George with the lines that make me think of my dear wife Joy’s passing:
I can’t get used to livin’ here while my heart is broke
My tears I cried for you.
I want you here to have and hold as the years go by
And we grow old and grey.
Now you’re expecting me to live without you
But that’s not something that I’m lookin’ forward to.
But all I’ve got is a photograph, and I realise you’re not comin’ back anymore.
It Don’t Come Easy is one of my endless loop songs.
