If she had not married Bill Clinton, she might have gotten herself elected to Congress in a heavily Democratic district, and conceivably become a senator. Maybe she would have latched on to another rising Democrat politician to help her own ambitions.

She was smart enough to realize that becoming Secretary of State is a way to make a lot of money, something none of her predecessors in that office ever realized.
