It was a winner!
I did as well. There also used to be "Armed Forces Day", a time when you could visit your local army base and ride the cool stuff and play with the radios. Even as late as 1966 they allowed civilians to shoot an M60 machine gun that cycled on compressed air.
In 1957 I was in Ulm, Germany. My dad was a chaplain in an artillery unit. That parade went right by Rommel's home. We got to ride in M48 tanks and wrestle with the massive breach block of an 8-inch self-propelled field piece. Germany was great for a seven year old!
Wow, what experiences for a 7 year old!
It was. I think all of the fears that it would be like a Russian or Chinese military parade were put to rest (or should have been).
It was like the Army museum in VA went on a roadshow. Or similar to interactive displays at a museum where you push a button and it describes what you’re looking at, or listening to the self guided tour on a headset at a museum, only you got to see the soldiers and equipment for real. It was educational. And basically a 3hr recruitment ad. ha. It was very American & patriotic.
From last night, a thank you to the nation from the US Army...
