From what I understood, during their heyday in 69/70 he was a fairly straight arrow, and then the drugs got to him. He also probably had some pre-existing mental issues that made it even worse.

Just had a 7 hour drive from Northern Cal to So Cal. Pretty much had the Satellite Radio on Classic rock and Tom Petty the whole time. A few to many a Sly and the Family Stone songs during the trip. These guys were even at Woodstock.

One of the true originals. Amazing talent, surrounded himself with amazing talent. In some ways he’s been lost to us for 50 years. But as long as he was around there was the hope. Good sailing Sly, thanks for all of it.

Larry Graham certainly deserves recognition as one of the best bass players.

My friends if there was ever a golden time when the races got along it was the 70’s. The 60’s had the turmoil protests as the civil rights act got passed and we were coming together in areas like music as well as TV-think Flip Wilson and Sanford and Son.

What made race relations go sour after all the progress? Think Jesse Jackson’s ‘88 POTUS run-didn’t work. The OJ verdict-an outburst of the pressure cooker. Fact is the Al Sharptons and poverty pimps needed this turmoil to stay relevant and rich. Whites even thought the Kenyan would do the trick and he made sure nothing good would happen.

What does Sly Stewart have to do with race relations? His music brought us together in a way the left couldn’t handle. It was progress even with all his warts.

From a time when we were a lot more colorblind. Great music coming out of Motown crossed all racial barriers. RIP Sly.

How odd. One of the songs that came up on my music list yesterday as I was driving back home from visiting my dad was “Thank You For letting Me Be Myself”. Hadn’t heard that one in years.

Ditto for James Brown.

I did not see the July 27, 1970 concert in Chicago’s Grant Park....because he didn’t show. I did see the riot than ensued.

Ditched my car on the shoulder near the Nat History museum as Lakeshore was a parking lot and walked the mile north. Crazy days.

Sly was a notable record producer as well - Beau Brummels, Great Society (Grace’s first band), and worked in radio.

The Father of Psychedelic Soul. RIP Sly.

I just looked him up a couple weeks ago to see if he was alive.

It wasn’t that great then. Sly received death threats for having an integrated band.

Wore out the Sly and the Family Stone greatest hits 8-track in the late 70s! Prayers for the family.

A few weeks ago, I saw Tedeschi Trucks in Irving. Special guest was Buddy Guy. The concert was so good, it piqued my interest for attending more concerts. Little River Band is performing in Arlington later this month. Then I learned none of the original members were part of this iteration. Hard pass!

RIP Sly, and to Frederick Forsyth.
