I’m of a mind that the CIA isn’t trying to stop hard-left tyrants, but instead is embracing them. I happen to think that the agency rose out of leftover members of the third reich that somehow escaped prosecution at Nuremberg.
But that’s just an opinion.
The CIA is the offspring of the OSS, a nest of Ivy League Rooseveltian progressives and "anti-fascists" (sound familiar?) that was coached and encouraged by British Military Intelligence, something which has long had a tendency to leave a great deal of misery in its wake. From the 1920s onward, and particularly from the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, many US and UK entities may have worn khaki and OD on the outside, but were red - or at least pink - underneath.
I think the OSS/CIA harboring of "useful Germans" was probably more pragmatic than anything, but - as with MI-5, MI-6 and MI-whatever - there has never been anything that they wouldn't make use of, no matter how much of a stain it might leave on their hands or their hearts.
