How were the Monkeys a fake band?

They were fake in the sense that four guys with some talent were just thrown together to form a band. It would not have happened organically. Not sure how often that kind of thing happens in show biz, but it is probably more common than people imagine.

In their case, it ended up working pretty well. There was some dispute as to whether or not they wrote any of their songs or even played their own instruments. But its undeniable that they could sing well together.

Mickey did the vocals for the Monkeys. The studio did the instrumentals. Just as the studio did the instermentals for The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album.

They weren’t. They were a manufactured band, compared to 4 or 5 guys starting out in a garage during high school. Sort of like the Hullabaloos, and the group that came from the other music show in the ‘60’s.
