Vietnam was being invaded by North Vietnam with it’s allies Russia and China helping them.

Make up any excuse you want and call it whatever makes you happy. It was an invasion by the USA that was an unmitigated disaster like all the other invasions since.
It's no different than the debacle in Ukraine that we launched, except in the case of Ukraine, we got a million Ukies killed and destroyed a nation and it only cost a few hundred billion!
