There was this President named "Reagan" ... and this idea called the "Stategic Defense Initiative" ... and this obstreperous enemy call the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics".
Communists sure do get their knickers in a twist when more-or-less free countries start seriously making preparations for self defense.
SDI was not involved in the dissolution of the USSR.
Two things were and it was not one of them.
1) Oil prices fell when Alaska and the North Sea came online (both now almost empty)
2) The USSR’s central bank was NOT authorized to do QE. All it could do was create money commensurate with Interior Ministry’s 5 yr plan.
Item 2 was actually more important. They could have created the necessary money to pay people domestically just like the Fed does — whimsically.
But they made the mistake of thinking monetary policy had to actually make sense and was something more than whimsy.
