A certain percentage of Democrats are happy to see criminals run free, because those criminals will most certainly vote D. These Democrats are evil.
But there is perhaps a larger percentage of everyday Democrats who reflexively have sympathy for the underdog. And they see criminals as underdogs, poor souls who just got a bad deal in life.
These Democrats are not evil. But they are stupid. Very, very stupid. They just can’t see that they are not defending lost sheep. They are defending vicious wolves.
I’d don’t know if even being mugged will change their minds.

That perception usually changes once they are personally victimized by one of those “lost sheep”. Bleeding heart liberals until reality hits them.
