You missed where the bison took a step or two toward the dog, in fighting stance, until it confirmed the dog was retreating.

The equivalent of someone who, at a later date, simply leans in at someone who they beat the tar out of, and the person flinches while the one doing the subtle jerk communicates the unspoken “Yeah. That’s right.”
