A new minimum wage proposal has Los Angeles hotels in a panic ahead of the 2028 Olympics, as it may drive businesses to discard deals or shutter plans completely.
The proposal of a $30 minimum hourly wage has hospitality corporations in the area preparing to slash expansion plans as well as deals in the works for the next Games.
The Olympics holds the potential for the hosting city to draw in thousands of tourists and spectators who come to watch the games from across the globe.
LA28, the private, non-profit company organizing the Games, has a budget of $6.9billion funded by corporate sponsorships, licensing agreements and a large contribution from the International Olympic Committee.
But fears are already looming that a hefty bill may end up in the hands of Los Angeles taxpayers, and the minimum wage proposal furthers worries as hotels threaten to move or cut business from the area.
This week it was decided that the council will deliberate on the proposal of hotel and airport minimum wage increases by July 1.
Wage increases were already set to happen this year, but the proposal details an increase to $25 by July 2026, $27.50 by July 2027 and $30 by July 2028 - in time for the Games.
Sun Hill Properties Inc. warned the council ahead of the vote that, should it be approved without significant changes, they 'absolutely will be pulling out of the room block for the Olympics'.

2028 is going to be on helluva of year.
Whether Kalifornia has enough competent managers at all levels necessary to pull off an Olympics is doubtful.
And all the while the state and city is ramping up for he Olympics you have an ongoing presidential election.
Newscum will be a candidate and he can’t execute one task at a time let along run a campaign and keep the Olympics on track.
Lunacy in LA-LA Land.
And the voters of Los Angeles have only themselves to blame.
> Isn’t Montreal still trying to pay off for the 1976 Olympics? <
Out of curiosity I looked it up. Montreal paid off the debt in 2006, 30 years after the games ended. Not after 3 years, but after 30 years.
It’s ridiculous. But I guess cities are willing to go into crazy debt just so their officials can brag, and wave from the stands.
Wait until the broke city of LA gets into the act and raises bed taxes to something like 50%.. It’s only rich tourists, right?
I wonder how much a decent, not luxury, hotel room costs now in L.A. and how much would it have to cost with a $30 minimum wage?
LA is a Cesspool.
I have heard Olympics don’t make a lot of money for anyone. The cost to having them outweighs the profit.
People just don't seem to care how much it costs for anything anymore. How this is possible is a mystery to me.
I have a family member in town and we met up for yoga and i bought coffee afterward. 1 iced coffee, 1 fresh juice, 1 bowl of yogurt with a little fruit/granola--$31.
I can't figure it out.
“I’ll side with the workers on this one. Everyone else is making money off the olympics why not them”
LA will raise Personal Income Taxes. Those workers who thought they were
making $30 an hour will end up making a lot less.
IOC executives make multimillion dollar salaries.
and did you pay it?
Trust me, my list of "no more" places is a mile long and growing to my own "joy detriment".
“Why do dogs lick their you-know-whats?”
Yep, simplest answer of all! You nailed it.
Soon only communist countries will host the Olympics and it will end.
Maybe they can hold some of the swimming events in the LA River. Diving too, especially 10-meter.

Yes, I know. I’ve always enjoyed going to my local coffee shop for breakfast or lunch. It’s a pleasant small hole in the wall with the woman owner busting her ass seven days a week and a gorgeous, quiet back patio in a courtyard. We’ve known each other on a first name basis for almost 30 years now. But basic bacon, eggs, toast, hash browns, coffee and a glass of milk is now $30. I remember I could afford the same breakfast in college back in 1969 - 1973 for about $2.50. That felt affordable back then (yes, inflation!)
These $30 breakfasts just don’t feel affordable in retirement. But my cost of cooking at home is over $6 with me supplying the labor, rent, and overhead.
That’s completely reasonable, especially considering the cost of living there, that it is temporary work, and they’re competing against well subsidized illegals.
President NewScum says that it’s important to help the downtrodden in America
I’m waiting for California to require the Olympic torch to be a solar powered LED light.
