When I was laid off, I went to the local unemployment office for "help" in finding a new job. That "help" was in the form of being handed a bunch of URLs for job sites (LinkedIn, Monster, and more.) This experience was a far cry from the help I received in my layoff thirty years ago, where I was put before a microfilm reader to go through job ads, as well as being handed a week-old Sunday classifieds section of the newspaper of record.

But, to the topic: not only did I get that list of URLs, but I was also given a form to fill out for SNAP benefits, with assurances that I would be accepted as a person receiving unemployment benefits. "Stretch your benefit dollars."

I was cut off of unemployment after four months ("we think you are double-dipping").

Still unemployed. After more than a thousand of job applications via that stack of URLs.

Am now re-thinking of applying for SNAP.

And here is the problem. There are so many who also in the same situation as you. Older folks who just do not make enough a month to get by without some help. Pretty hard to get by on even $1,200 a month when rent on a one bedroom apartment is an average of $1,100 a month. Not everyone has a home paid off to live in.
