Does it seem to you that people find more gold/silver/bronze coins in England than anywhere else in Europe or even the world.

There’s hardly a year that goes by when there isn’t some news of a vast new hoard of coins being found somewhere in England—but not so much ireland or scotland or even wales

The Roman Empire was prosperous for much of its history, for one thing. R. McLaughlin cites information about how most of the tax revenue supporting state activities came from a relatively few provinces, and how some (particularly border spots) were net drains on resources. Those areas had to be held presumably because of the neg conseq if they weren’t.

Britain seems to have been the preferred retirement destination for military personnel who took their land grants.
