I’ve known people who have attempted suicide. They get put in the loony bin for 30 days and release if it’s believed the threat has passed.
Red Flag laws consider the case of those being a bona-fide threat to others and guns can be seized without a hearing involving the defendant. So in the threat to others case, the comparable treatment would be to hold them in jail until it’s believed the threat has passed.
This is the oxymoron of Red Flag laws - if they are not truly a danger, then there is no need to take the guns. If they are, they need to be locked up.
Red Flag laws are probably many more times abused for personal or political purposes, than used for the ostensible purpose the public expects, or would expect.
