This BBC film examines the myth behind the sixties, which was itself created before the decade was even out but has since lingered in all of our minds. What we have lived with however is merely a mirage and this documentary sets about exposing the truth, suggesting that we are living on borrowed time as a result of those who indulged whilst an unchecked Britain experienced an industrial decline. Looking back on old archived footage and the political atmosphere of the time a case is built against the decade we all consider to be filled with dreams

I lived through the 60s, school days and stuff... But I say sixties shmixties, the eighties Rocked!!
Which sounds as if you mean to say the Beats first appeared in 1968.
Of course you know the terms “beat generation” was factually coined in the 1940’s.
Sorry for the confusion.
Ditto to that @
I remember that well. First exposure to inflation. Also born in 1950.
I'm NOT saying that you "don't" remember the decade, just that, unless you were an extremely bright, into news and politics, as well as more adult kinds of topics, ten year old, some of that decade are only childhood memories.
That’s okay, I DO actually know this stuff and try to post detailed, FACTUAL info. But I’m really attempting to keep most of what I’m posting to just the ‘60s...though admittedly I have strayed a bit into earlier decades. :-)
I was a loyal Republican from the 50’s on, so I didn’t get sucked into the excesses of the 60’s. Which means I enjoyed that decade. I loved the music and the posters that adorned our walls. I still have one that I carried with me from my LA office. And the fashion! Adored it! Still have a full rack of wild dresses from those years that I’ll never give up as souvenirs and memories. Never took drugs and never drank alcohol, but I had the most wonderful time driving over the California hills in a small red sports car. Really glad I had those years and remember them fondly.
Not only did I go through the sexual revolution without firing a shot, I wasn’t even asked to roll bandages.
Then Came Bronson
Yup, I turned 13 in 1980.

The Great Society, the War on Poverty, micromanagement of the war in Viet Nam with no aim of victory…. LBJ was a disaster.
I raise you hippies and liberalism your bet
One word: Television.
Before Television, for the most part young people were clueless about current events, they didn’t read newspapers or listen to news on the radio.
Then with Television they could see what was going on, especially with Civil Rights, which up to that point was pretty much “Out of Sight, Out of Mind”. Then came the nightly coverage of Vietnam.
You could see what was going on that they wanted to tell you about. That's always a problem. As means of retrieving information expand it becomes more difficult to control it, which is a blessing.
OK
JFK, Cuban Missile Crisis, the Stonewall Rebellion, National Organization for Women, Bay of Pigs.
Having come of age during the 60s, I can assure you not much good came out of that decade.
We have little control over that, we will always have terrible representatives. I was listening to Rand Paul this morning complain that he can't sign on to a 3 trillion dollar budget expansion, I have to say to myself, where have you been the last decade plus?
One of the reasons I am not necessarily a fan of televising Congress. All it does is lead to a bunch of grandstanding.
