When I read the headline I figured it was in Bridgeport. But the north end of Hartford can be tough as well.
I used to have to drive through that area to get to visit my wife at St Francis hospital. The doors were locked, and I looked forward and made no eye contact. Just as if I were crossing the Savannah and was looking out for wild beasts.
If you have the courage to drive very slowly through the North End—and look closely at some of the old buildings—you can still see the Hebrew lettering on some of the walls.
The riots of 1968 chased the remaining Jewish folks out of the north end.

The last Republican mayor of Hartford left office in 1971.
