My son in law is deployed. I take my grandson to the barbershop in his town. It has to be the most “bro” experience I have had in decades. It has a very “young” vibe. There are six or seven chairs going on, nice coffee, a card game playing, big screen TV with ESPN on, and the barbers all look like the guys from the old Luden Cough Drop box.
At first I thought, “This place must be a mob front.” But I was very wrong.
They are the nicest guys to my four year old grandson. I can imagine him going to this place for the rest of his life.
I wish it was closer to my house…I would go.
I’ve seen two or three places like this open in surrounding towns in the past year or so. I think the “white barbershop” is looking to become the same kind of social center that black barbershops have been since the beginning of time.
I think that’s a great idea. My dad used to go to the Base to get his hair cut. I think it was ten bucks. A few years ago, I attended a small business seminar and a black guy showed up who wanted to start his own barbershop. After a couple of hours of hearing him talk about what he wanted to do, it became very obvious that he knew more than the SBA facilitator and had learned his business knowledge from working in various barbershops. I hope he got his business going.
I still have a great barbershop. You can get your hair cut while you watch old John Wayne videos on their TV. Maybe Clint Eastwood, but almost always a great old western. No haircut feels complete anymore without hot lather and a straight razor on the back of your neck and by the ears. Maybe get a shave too if I want to splurge.
