In my town, there are old school barbershops a plenty. Some are really “old school”, some are new with the old school feel/look. Still a place to get good conversation and a good haircut, shave, with hot lather, hot towel, etc. Not quite as inexpensive as it used to be, but still a good experience.
Super Cuts isn’t my idea of a barber shop, same goes for a uni-sex shop. There are still plenty of old fashioned barber shops around that cater to men.
I cut my own hair about every six weeks at home in about 45 minutes for free. The only way to fly for me.
I do miss going. The old guy who cut my hair wore the standard high-collar barber tunic. I liked him, and we would talk about everything, sports, politics, events, you name it.
I never got the impression the younger guy liked talking, and he began doing more of the haircutting, and I didn’t enjoy going there.
It was about 45 min from my house, and I liked going because I could walk a mile up the street to go to the excellent Tex-Mex restaurant that had been my favorite. It was fun. I liked making a day of it.

I completely get that. I could never totally get the hang of cutting my own hair, but I did that for a while too.
When I was younger, I had a favorite barber. He was quite a character. He had sheets of off color jokes and politically incorrect racial jokes. It was definitely, a male zone, although mothers did come in with their boys, and he eventually married and his wife would hang out there too. He ran a strictly cash business, which led him to seek tax write-offs. When he renovated the second floor of the building into an apartment, the township workers started showing up to harass him. He litigated with the township to the point they were court ordered to stay off his property. The cops would need to call out to him from the street if they wanted to talk to him. Around the time of Covid he retired. Today, there are few like him, and have been replaced by larger hair stylists. While some still focus on males, it is not the same experience.
I used to get my hair cut at the barbershop in Cam ̣Đức but about 15-16 years ago the hớt tóc- barbershops- all became uớn tóc- hair stylists and the prices went way up. No difference in service. Now I cut my hair very short before I go to Việt Nam and let it grow out for one or three months while I am there.
I’m 72. When I was a kid, haircuts were 20¢ on the base, one style only - butch 1/4” everywhere.
These days I go to a 50s themed one-man barbershop. It’s not uncommon to wait a couple hours for your turn in the chair.
My barber, Leroy, learned to cut his own hair in a mirror when he couldn’t find anyone else who could do it to his satisfaction.
I visit the barbershop every 6-7 weeks, to cut what’s left of the headtop hair, get the beard trimmed, and all the hair-where-it-shouldn’t-be removed. It’s an all-male, every-racial shop, with a rotating crew of six Hispanics who make for an enjoyable atmosphere, and who know everything from how to handle the off-the-wall-weird cuts of a particular ethnicity to what an old white guy needs. $20+tip for my cut, I’m extravagant and usually tip $10.
I remember guys going to the unisex shop for the females to cut their hair. They wanted the one with big boobs because she would rub them around their head while cutting their hair and they’d tip her heavily. These were married men. No, I didn’t go there.
There are no “barber shops” where I live. Men have to go to one of the chains like Great Clips to have their hair cut.
I have an electric hair cutter with 9 length settings, hair-thinning shears, regular shears, and a hand-held mirror. Saves me time and money.
For decades I went cheap on hair stylists.
Not anymore!
You get what you pay for.

The author might be amused to learn that the banner under the sign of the barber shop I patronize reads “The Last Male Outpost”. Half of the barbers there are women. It works out just fine.
My barber is a woman in her own shop. I asked her one time why she didn’t work in a salon etc... She said she couldn’t stand the other stylists and all the drama. They are also not barbers they are stylists (they don’t use clippers).
Oh, and a comb...
One sure way to confirm your getting older......when you realize you are older than your barber 😏
