Hahahahaha...I think of those times in the Navy after I got out of Boot Camp and went to my “A” School in Memphis, TN. (NATTC Memphis)
We were still having inspections, and we had to get hair cuts. So, the night before, in the barracks, there were guys giving out hair cuts for those who hadn’t had them in advance.
We had this one big guy, whose face in my mind resembled the face of the big guy in Full Metal Jacket, but he wasn’t a chubby guy like that, he was just big, and he had a beard.
Well, we were all trashed, watching this guy get his hair cut, and the guy doing the cutting was screwing it up. Every time he screwed it up, he went higher trying to fix it, and after a while, what started out funny began to seem kind of...hazardous. None of us knew this big guy that well, and he was pretty drunk.
Those of us watching began to wonder if, each time he looked at his hair after another attempt to “fix” it, he was going to blow his top and beat up the guy cutting his hair, who was clearly getting nervous about it.
And with each attempt at fixing it, his hair looked more and more outlandish and bizarre until the big guy realized it was beyond fixing and said “Just take it all off.”
When the amateur barber did so, the combination of the boot camp style buzz cut and the remaining beard on his face, combined with his weird looking face and huge size, made him look nearly demonic! But...he didn’t beat the guy up.
When we were inspected the next morning, I must not have been the only person who thought his appearance looked quite odd, because he was put on report.
In retrospect, he would have been fine if he had shaved that beard off! Leaving it intact with all his hair gone gave him a distinctly barbaric or satanic look!
Yes in the black community
In Nashville a few still exist but have gone up $$
And a lot mimic old shops with hot shaves etc $$$$
As a kid
U went and waited in the seats facing the row of barbers
It was once a month me and my dad
When I moved from the East Coast to New Mexico I didn’t think about doctors or dentists but finding a mechanic and someone to cut my hair. After one bad experience at a local barbershop, someone recommended a young lady at a funky place near the University. I went and it clicked. That was 1992. I’ve followed her to several different salons (always small and weird) over the years. It’s nice to follow along with the progress of her kids, and this and that. During covid, the place she worked switched over to appointment only which works well. She has tons of customers who have been with her for 30+ years (me included). Some of her older ones are homebound, but she goes to their house. On more than one occasion, at the request of the family, she has gone to funeral homes and styled the hair of ladies who had passed so they’d be pretty one last time.
Your dad looked like a classic soldier/officer should look like.
I so hero-worshipped my dad! Well-better that than some sports figure, and I did that too at times in my life...:)
I still have a great barbershop. You can get your hair cut while you watch old John Wayne videos on their TV. Maybe Clint Eastwood, but almost always a great old western. No haircut feels complete anymore without hot lather and a straight razor on the back of your neck and by the ears. Maybe get a shave too if I want to splurge.
The way a lot of guys look these days.
Hahahaha...I was thinking precisely of that as I was writing it!
I used to go to a Supercuts and some did cut the hair real good while others did a bad job plus left cut hair all over my face!
I cut my own now and have since 2020. It is really easy using a Wahl cordless clipper.

FTA: local Supercuts (before I finally realized that they didn’t know what they were doing and were butchering my hair)
#119 Your dad the one on the left?... 😁
Well, that guy looks like all business too...my dad did say the South Koreans were pretty tough!
