If the Army and Navy have their own aircraft, why do we need a separate Air Force? Why not put all our aircraft under Army and Navy control, as in WW2?

There is a place for an Air Force in strategic bombing. But I’m guessing that if the Army ran the Air Force today, army generals would push for ground support planes over strategic bombers.
Just a guess.

Aircraft is Strategic Air Command. Land and air based nuclear weapons. Now support that mission.
I don’t know what all goes on today, but in my Army days the Army had its own navy. Yes, I even had a ride on one of their ships way back in 1974. And I also recall Army ships supplying an Army garrison in Ethiopia on the Red Sea.
There’s duplication all over the place.
For one thing, they'd have to give up all those cool golf courses..
