People who live in very cold climates have socialist tendencies. Not communists, mind you.

This creates unusual outcomes all the time, at least for people fixated on the red-blue dichotomy.

The two biggest feels of northern New Englanders are “mind your own business” and “make sure your neighbors are OK”.

I don't see the correlation. North Dakota, Montana, Alaska?

The people who live in the coldest parts of Maine are not the problem. It’s the high percentage of wealthy liberal transplants in the southern coastal and mid coastal region that hold sway, to the deep resentment of the northern and interior residents. It’s a viciously deep divide.

[[People who live in very cold climates have socialist tendencies.]]

I lived in, and still do, cold country and have always lived in areas that are conservative- Maine is quite conservative but the problem is the liberals moved into the districts that matter come voting time- Those areas tend to be right on the coastlines, in the most popular towns- but muh of Maine outside those areas is or at least was, quite conservative and independent-
