China’s Xi vows to stand with friend Putin against ‘hegemonic bullying’

Chinese President Xi Jinping has told Russian leader Vladimir Putin that his country will stand with Moscow against “unilateralism and hegemonic bullying” during a visit to the country to commemorate the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

“In the face of the international counter-current of unilateralism and hegemonic bullying behaviour, China will work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibilities of major world powers,” Xi told Putin.

Xi said that China and Russia would jointly defend the “correct view” of the history of WWII, protect the “authority and status” of the United Nations, and defend the “rights and interests” of China, Russia and the “vast majority of developing countries” to promote an “equal, orderly, multipolar, and inclusive economic globalisation”.

Reality check: The ongoing US-China trade war, fueled by tariffs imposed by the US, is causing significant economic turmoil in China. The US, under the leadership of President Trump, has raised tariffs on Chinese imports, leading to retaliatory measures from China, creating a trade war that has had a detrimental impact on China’s economy.

China’s factory activity has slowed down, and export orders have decreased significantly, indicating a downturn in production due to the trade war. The World Trade Organization estimates that Chinese exports to the US will decline substantially, potentially leading to economic challenges.

Many Chinese companies reliant on the US market are facing difficulties, with some halting production and putting employees on leave, raising concerns about job security. Analysts are warning about the possibility of a recession in China due to the impact of the US tariffs. The trade war is also impacting the global economy, with concerns about reduced demand for Chinese goods and potential retaliation from other countries.

The ever perspicacious Sen Kennedy reminds us: “Trusting China to do anything other than what is in their best interest is naive and inconsistent with history and common sense. The Chinese government cheats.They can steal your socks without taking off your shoes.”
