Perhaps the site was the location of a medieval nunnery; they always had their own burial grounds. And it was not uncommon for wealthy women — widows and young women of noble families — to join nunneries, providing much-needed support and bringing their wealthy trappings with them.

This makes sense. Like you said, many wealthy older widows, retired into nunneries...
