US issues ‘do not travel’ warning for 21 countries — here’s what you need to know

The US has added two countries to its “do not travel” list.

Last month, government officials added North Korea and Burkina Faso to the list of countries Americans are advised against visiting.

The State Department has four travel advisory levels: exercise normal precautions, exercise normal precautions, reconsider travel, and do not travel.

The threat level in North Korea and Burkina Faso has been upgraded to Level 4.

It’s the highest of the US State Department’s safety ranking system.

Travel to North Korea has been discouraged due to “the continuing serious risk of arrest, long-term detention, and the threat of wrongful detention.”

Visiting Burkina Faso has been advised against because of increased “terrorism, crime, and kidnapping.”

This update has brought the total number of countries Americans should avoid traveling to 21.

Certain parts of Mexico have also been issued Level 4 warnings, although the travel advisory level for Mexico as a whole has remained at Level 2 (“Exercise increased caution”) for several years.

The announcements come amid rising global tensions and security situations in several regions.

My brother married a woman who is the granddaughter of a middle-eastern immigrant who fled that country in the 1920s as a Christian and came to the US. Apparently there was some story about an uncle being kidnapped or something... I can never follow her ridiculous stories, so I didn't pay much attention to it.

Fast forward to the 2010s. My brother has been sent to a very wealthy country in the ME by his company. He did not want to go, but was sort of forced ("do it or get fired.") During that trip, he was sent to a dinner at a sheikh's house. Gold toilets in the bathroom, the whole deal. The sheikh refused to talk business until he had grilled my brother on his family. So my brother entered the interrogation with "My wife's family is from ____." The sheikh replied, "Yes, I know who your wife's family is." My brother said the hair raised up on the back of his neck. He had never even mentioned the family name, so obviously this guy had already researched everything about him before he even showed up. He spent the rest of the week with his head on a swivel and didn't leave his hotel unless he absolutely had to.

My brother returned home and submitted his resignation letter. Unfortunately, he is still married to that idiot, who has gone on to destroy all family connections here. She's a real piece of work.

About 5 years ago I was taking an Air Ethopia flight. As we neared landing in Addis Ababa they advertised vacation packages to sunny Mogadishu in Somalia. Somehow I was never enticed enough to visit.

Anyone with half-a-brain wouldn’t be going to any of those countries to begin with. And why isn’t China on that list?
