There are certain things in a marriage that are best kept private. Every woman is entitled to her secrets, but so is a man, even if mine are not at all saucy. BTW, the book was more than worth it, though it is just a bunch of disconnected essays of varying quality.
There is an interesting chapter on the contemporary American reaction, and several of the essays are by modern Americans. I think the Americans had the best take on the whole affair. In couple of generations, by 1900, Americans would be the most capable and productive astronomers in the world, and seeds were obvious by 1846.
