On the English side of my family, I had two Great Aunts, Dusty Lung and Lucy Blood.
Wait….you can give babies Christian names in the UK? I thought everyone had to have Muslim names these days?
Actually there were two apostles named James (Jacob): James the son of Zebedee and James the son of Alphaeus. See Matthew 10.2-4. Similar lists in Luke 6.14-16 and Mark 3.16-19.
Mohammed is number one and has been since 2022 when it overtook Noah as number one.
Nice memory. When I was in high school, the given names of the five kids next door all started with “L”. I never heard why their mom & dad did that.
This is one heckuva lot better than Mohammed.
Your right Mohammed is the most common name in the UK.
When I was in grade school, there was a family in our parish with about 9 kids, all of whose first names started with T.
“On the English side of my family, I had two Great Aunts, Dusty Lung and Lucy Blood.”
My great grandmother’s maiden name ( on my Ma’s side ) was Bessie Hand .
I think I’d start running out after four or five names.
"Karen" will be back in style 100 years from now.
My grandchildren are Eleanor, Henry, Simon and Josephine
I like, ‘Tarquin.’ Had never heard it until I read the ‘Maisie Dobbs’ series of detective novels which start in WWI when Maisie lies about her age and joins the fight. Brave Girl!
Tarquin is one of her Godsons who is injured in WWII, but he only loses an arm. ;)
It’s a great series. Highly recommended.
I know a 2 year old named Alice. She has blond curls and the bluest eyes. Her baby brother is James.
Probably a lot less. It’s use as a pejorative was a fad and will fade quickly.
Gen Z will prolly stop using "Karen" as an insult. Maybe they'll name their children "Karen" lol.
“Old Testament Jewish names, too.”
I’m not Jewish, but love the OT names — NT names, too, of course. I always liked Jael/Yael. She was cool. Also like the name Lydia.
Yeah, that would be hard for me to come up with.
Off the top of my head, no cheating:
Thomas.
Theodore / Ted
Thaddeus (earlier in this thread)
Tyler / Ty (a contractor working on our garden today!)
Tobias
Trini (does Spanish count?)
No girls’ names!
That’s it. I’m sure I’m going to be embarrassed for missing obvious ones. I’ll blame it on the Cabernet I had at dinner.
