Yes, I was looking up my co-worker’s sub, the Archerfish. Of course, he was on the one commissioned in 1971, not the one from 1943. But I always teased him about sinking the Japanese carrier.

You would appreciate how we used many of those post war re-builds. A few were nukes, some got used as test beds (Barbel and Bonefish come to mind and are still in museums), and some got used for electronic surveillance.

Two of my favorites were the Tang and Wahoo (563/565). We docked them on rails, cut them in half, added 16 feet to their middles, added batteries, then turned them into sea going Radio Shacks. We tested them and sent them on their way to listen to commies do stoopid stuff. They stayed quiet until they got parked.

The last US submarine to sink a Japanese ship was USS Greeneville (SSN-772) on 9 February 2001 near Saipan. It collided with and sank the Japanese fishery high school training ship Ehime Maru (えひめ丸), causing the fishing boat to sink in less than ten minutes with the death of nine crew members, including four high school students.
