I spent a terrific week in Turkey before Islamist Erdogan became president. Went with a Jewish friend and we hired a guide who spoke English and drove us all over the country. People were delighted to see Americans then, even unveiled me, and I bought a lot of valuable stuff for very little money. Turks love cats, every stray was well fed. But they hate dogs. We fed stray dogs in every town we visited.
