The phrase “Kilroy Was Here” and its accompanying cartoon character gained popularity during World War II as a symbol of American soldiers’ presence. The origin story is debated, but the most common version involves James J. Kilroy, a shipyard inspector who marked completed work in Quincy, Massachusetts, with the phrase. The phrase was then adopted by American soldiers and spread throughout the war theaters.
