All the inside reporting was that his interviews were horrible, and that he was "arrogant". A key part of those interviews is "whiteboarding", where they put plays and defenses up on a board and ask the quarterback about what he would do in a given situation, etc..

My guess is that he basically punted on the whiteboarding, told teams he didn't do things that way, and that he was a guy who just saw and reacted the right way on the field. If he refused to whiteboard -- something every QB does during that process -- it would have been a massive red flag.
