I thought years ago they said the pope before Francis was considered the last.

maybe Francis is the last, last?

Francis may be the last Jesuit Pope, having been the first.

The College of Cardinals is roughly comprised 50/50 of Francis appointed and Benedict appointed bishops. Benedict previously held the majority but many have exceeded the 80 year old voting restriction.

Even so, I expect the next Pontiff will be a moderate successor to Francis. John Paul I and John Paul II were both more conservative than the liberal Paul VI.
