Calls from the Kremlin for direct Russian flights to the U.S. to be restored as a condition for a ceasefire in Ukraine are facing opposition from the EU, Politico reported on Friday.
The U.S. and the European Union both banned Russian planes from flying over their airspace following Moscow’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russian aviators are also barred by U.S. and EU sanctions from receiving spare parts and servicing from Western providers.
The sanctions have cost Russian airlines access to some of their most lucrative routes, while the parts and servicing embargo has affected 95% of national carrier Aeroflot’s fleet, according to The Moscow Times
Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, told journalists last Friday that Russia’s delegation at peace talks in Riyadh had floated the idea of lifting the U.S. flight ban.
“We made this offer at the meeting in [Saudi Arabia] more than a month ago,” The Moscow Times quoted Lavrov as saying. “The Americans considered it, but so far we haven’t seen any response.”
Safety concerns
To fly to the U.S. without passing over the EU would be costly and time-consuming, and Brussels remains a stumbling block for Moscow’s ambitions, Politico reported.
“First, EU sanctions stand firm against Russia, which includes a ban on Russian airlines flying over EU airspace,” Politico quoted an EU official as saying.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, added that a resumption of Russian flights would also entail significant safety risks as “it is not known if Russian air operators and air traffic services have been properly maintained over the past three years, putting the airworthiness of the Russian fleet seriously in question.”

Trump’s alleged 100-day plan to end the war in Ukraine includes conducting a phone call with Putin in late January or early February, meeting with both Putin and Zelensky in February or March, and declaring a ceasefire along the front lines by Easter, which falls on April 20 this year.
