Cooling. The edges cooled first when exposed to air (or lower temperature molten rock), and hardened more than the softer molten rock, which caused the edges to break away.

then how come all the images shown from the 30 linked to, not including the 2 main pics and the article source, why do none of those 30 pictures show beveled miters like the source pictures do if they are natural?
