I’ve despised the Peace Corps concept for almost that long.
#1 The Peace Corps beguiles young, naive, impressional people into very risky situations w/o support. The volunteers are left on their own in dangerous circumstances, rapes and assaults are basically ignored.
#2 Liberals and their “sounds noble” hare brained, bootless schemes disgust me....=
#3 There is so much that needs to be done in USA and locally if you have a sincere urge to contribute your efforts rather than virtue signal or enhance your resume.

Exactly correct.
I know a (white) woman who worked for the Peace Corps in Jamaica for several years. She acknowledged that she was often in very dangerous situations with no backup nearby. She had no serious incidents—but it easily could have gone another way for her.
It’s been particularly unsafe for young women many of whom were assaulted and not supported when it happened. It’s interesting that the current head of the Peace Corps used to be a professional women’s basketball player and currently volunteers to coach a girls’ team.
