I remember initial reporting on a large drop in number of cell phone subscribers in China in 2020. I haven’t seen any follow up on that metric.
Any metric on China’s current population has to come from an indirect source not affiliated with CCP.
CCP would need to keep this information secret because if there is a really large drop in population, that would seriously affect Chinese capacity to borrow money, loans interest rates.

Yeah, that story just vanished in a cloud of "anyone saying the virus came from China is a racist, why, they haven't even had any casualties!" that I was hearing on Reddit.
